CASTING CALL: ONE FOR THE MONEY by Janet Evanovich

Trying something different today!  There's a meme over at Mindful Musings called Movie Cast Monday, and since I love movies and books (this series in particular), I decided to do a post of my own in that vein.  I'm calling it Casting Call, simply b/c like most writers, I do love me some alliteration J

So as the title says, today's Casting Call is all about Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels.  In the past, Evanovich stated that she thought the studios were missing out.  Stephanie and her eccentric band of misfits would kill in the box office similar to how they'd made a killing on the bestsellers lists for years.  I couldn't agree more.  I wanted to see this series made into live-action ever since I discovered Miss Plum.

But my cast definitely would've been different than the official line up.  You can see the vid below for details.

Katherine Heigl is just not my Stephanie.  Maybe she'll do great and I'm just worried for nothing, but in all her roles Heigl is just…Heigl.  Her characters all read similarly on screen, and Stephanie Plum has her own quirky sense of humor.  I'll be curious to see if she can pull it off.

Then there's Morelli (*sigh*) and Ranger (*double sigh*), Stephanie's two love interests.  I don't even know where to begin.  Morelli was supposed to look boyishly charming (or at least he did in my head) not angry/serial killer-ish like the guy playing him.  And let's not forget, ITALIAN.

Oh, and then there's Ranger…  My lovely, lovely Ranger.  What have they done to you???  Ranger is not supposed to look like that.  I'm sorry.  The guy playing him is simply too small, too unassuming, too…NOT him.

As you can see, I have strong opinions on the matter, but I wonder what you all think.  Is this your dream cast?  Do you think they could've done better?  Any suggestions?  I'd love to hear your thoughts J

  1. Okay-so, I'm a big fan of the Plum series and I think I'm going to cry. And the sad part is that the three main characters (Stephanie/Morelli/Ranger) are the ones that totally blow! Why? Why?? WHY??? Katherine Heigl, really, REALLY? (twice...Greys Anatomy just for you, Ninja Girl!) And Morelli...do they really think dying the guys hair (or is that a wig? either way UGH!) makes him more Morelli? It does not. (and I think that guy is kinda hot in a there's something not quite right about that guy sort way...but he ain't no Morelli). And Ranger...Ranger, we hardly knew ye. What happened to the hair? What happen to the size? What happened to the danger? What happened to the 'please God, just one hour with Ranger' inspired feelings? No sir, no sir I say. But Grandma Mazur and Lula - I think priceless! So in a nutshell - WHY?????

  2. i have this big bone against Janet Evanovich, through no fault of her own. I used to work in a used bookstore and this woman would come in always looking for our reviewer copies of JE books. The reviewer copies were almost brand new, never been read before copies at like 50% off, and yet, she'd always find a corner dented or something and then throw a fit. It's a USED book store lady!
Hence, now JE just puts me in a foul mood

  5. @PAT You crack me up!! :)

@Falen Completely understandable. Customers like that can be a pain

@My anxious life I second that...please, oh please, don't let it bomb! I really want them to succeed w/this story even if I disagree w/the casting.

@LaniWendtYoung I hear you, and I hope you do check them out. Stephanie herself is pretty hilarious, but Lula and Grandma Mazur...those ladies have got the funny in their blood :)

  6. I wish this movie had been made years ago and then Sandra Bullock could have played Stephanie - she was the perfect choice. I hate the Heigl casting, but to be fair, I can't think of anybody who'd be good enough today.
